Jewellery design is an art or a profession of turning an idea or concept into a solid object usually in a precious metal such as gold, silver or platinum and often using a variety of precious gemstones.
Jewellery design has evolved in the last few years from the days of paper and pencils to the latest CAD or computer aided design, limited only by the imagination or the skill of the designer.
Traditionally a goldsmith was a skilled craftsman that shaped gold into hollowware such as goblets, bowls and platters. However, with the decline in demand for these types of products and the rising cost of gold the role of the tradition goldsmith has diminished.
The modern jeweller has to some degree taken on the role of the goldsmith with many jewellers specialising in one off or bespoke handmade jewellery. The modern jeweller uses a variety of hand tools such as hand pliers, saws, needle files, motorised hand drills and micro torches and some more heavy-duty tools such as rolling mills and laser welders to craft a modern piece of jewellery. Many pieces of jewellery are set with gemstones including diamonds, sapphires, emeralds and many others.
